In a dog-eat-dog world, musical refreshing, lively

A howling good time was had by all watching the clever and witty "Dogs: The Musical" on Monday at Footlight Players Theatre as part of Piccolo Spoleto Festival.

It was conceived and written by talented Paddy Mahoney Bell with musical director Dick Goodwin composing and arranging spunky music for the fanciful lyrics.

In this dog-eat-dog world, it's refreshing to see a show full of optimism from the point of view of our favorite canines. Spirit-lifting songs address the fundamental dilemma that Shadow, a young mutt played by H.D. Foster, needs to find a home. He befriends Emerson, the older mutt played by Will Shuler. The cardboard cartoon-like park is full of a variety of dogs that are costumed magnificently by Adam Bain, who also is responsible for the dog-look-a-like makeup. Choreographer Jessica Bright kept the pack on their toes with all the right moves.

Director Jerry Stevenson perfectly matched actor to character which lent credibility to all the performers on stage.

Purrscilla, the cat, played by Jo Claussen, was the glue that kept the show moving at warp speed. Her credentials as a professional actor jumped right out at you. She was marvelous as the storyteller, and also while singing in Carol Channing style, especially the opening number "This Cat Needs A Job."

The child, Charlotte, played by Talya Starkey, was only an eighth-grader with the maturity of an adult. Her song "Best Friend" sang with Shadow was very sweet and moving.

All the performers were in great voice, with no weak link.

There was Cameron Bell as the Irish wolfhound, Lisa Odom as the Shetland sheepdog, Lee Smith as the schnauzer, Jessica Bright as the cocker spaniel, Kristin Abbott as the poodle and Jerry Stevenson as the yellow lab.

One of best show-stopping tunes was "Cowboy-Cursin' Fleas" led by Smith with the ensemble at its best. Two hours just flew by. This reviewer would give this show 10 paws and an A+ for the surprise ending!
